CREDENTIALS
My best credentials are referrals from
satisfied clients, but for four years I put
my thoughts about cars into a monthly
automotive commentary called Car-Ma.
I drew my inspiration from all the usual
automotive publications (see "LINKS"),
so by the time it got to my subscribers I
couldn't really call it a "newsletter."
I owed those paid subscribers to a
practice born of one part courtesy and
one part fantasy. The fantasy part is the
idea that some automotive writer whose
work I had referenced might some day
be at an event and get blind-sided by
someone asking, "Did you see what
Dick Stewart wrote about your column?"
However unlikely that event, out of
courtesy, I sent a copy to anyone I
quoted.
As a result, multiple award-winning
AutoWeek Columnist Denise
McCluggage wrote about my writing in
her syndicated column, "Drive She Said,"
in which she ascribed "the clear crystal
ring of truth" to one of my observations.
She gave my address, leading to
requests for copies. I replied to each
personally, and a few subscribed.
